CHEMISTRYCHAPTER-16 (SUBJECTIVE)CLASS TEST-1
TIME: 22 MINMARKS: 20

Attempt any 10 Questions.

i. Write the importance of oxidation number.

Ans: Oxidation number helps us to:
  • identify whether a species is oxidized or reduced;
  • balance redox equations;
  • name compounds (e.g. iron(II) and iron(III) compounds) and find oxidizing / reducing agents.

ii. Write any two rule of oxidation number.

Ans:
  • The oxidation number of an element in its free state is zero (e.g. Na, O2, Cl2).
  • The oxidation number of oxygen is −2 in most compounds (except peroxides, where it is −1) and of hydrogen is +1 (except metal hydrides, where it is −1).

iii. Why is the formula of calcium chloride written as CaCl2?

Ans: Calcium loses two electrons to form Ca2+, while each chlorine atom gains one electron to form Cl−. One Ca2+ ion needs two Cl− ions to make the compound electrically neutral, so the formula is CaCl2.

iv. Write the three ways to describe the oxidation and reduction.

Ans:
  • Electron transfer: oxidation is loss of electrons; reduction is gain of electrons.
  • Oxygen / hydrogen: oxidation is gain of oxygen or loss of hydrogen; reduction is loss of oxygen or gain of hydrogen.
  • Oxidation number: oxidation is an increase in oxidation number; reduction is a decrease in oxidation number.

v. Define reduction in terms of electrons.

Ans: Reduction is the gain of electrons by an atom, ion or molecule. Example: Cu2+ + 2e− → Cu

vi. What is electrolysis?

Ans: Electrolysis is the process in which an electrolyte (molten or in aqueous solution) is decomposed into its elements or products by passing a direct electric current through it.

vii. What is brine?

Ans: Brine is a concentrated aqueous solution of sodium chloride (NaCl).

viii. Write the reaction occur at cathode.

Ans: Reduction occurs at the cathode.
  • Molten NaCl: Na+ + e− → Na
  • Brine: 2H2O + 2e− → H2 + 2OH−

ix. What is a fuel cell?

Ans: A fuel cell is a galvanic cell that converts the chemical energy of a fuel (such as H2) and an oxidant (such as O2) directly into electrical energy, continuously, as long as the reactants are supplied.

x. What are the main disadvantages of hydrogen fuel cells?

Ans:
  • Hydrogen is difficult and costly to store and transport (highly flammable gas).
  • Catalysts such as platinum are expensive, so the cell is costly.
  • Producing pure hydrogen needs a lot of energy.

xi. What is rusting?

Ans: Rusting is the corrosion of iron in the presence of moisture and oxygen, forming a reddish-brown layer of hydrated iron(III) oxide, Fe2O3·xH2O.

xii. What is galvanization?

Ans: Galvanization is the coating of iron or steel with a thin layer of zinc to protect it from rusting.

xiii. Write the name of the three objectives of electroplating.

Ans:
  • To protect metals from corrosion.
  • To improve the appearance (decoration).
  • To increase hardness, thickness or wear resistance of the article.

xiv. Write the condition during the electroplating.

Ans:
  • The article to be plated is made the cathode; the plating metal is the anode.
  • The electrolyte is a solution of a salt of the plating metal.
  • A direct current is used, and the article must be clean.
